Milk Thistle(Botanical Source Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn), is a plant species under the genus Silybum, family Asteraceae. The original planting area is Western Europe and North Africa. Now the Milk Thistle is widely cultivated in Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Shaanxi, Heilongjiang, Hebei and other provinces in China, Part used is seed. Historically, people have used milk thistle for liver disorders, such as hepatitis and cirrhosis, and gallbladder problems. Milk thistle contains several groups of substances: Flavonolignans: Silymarin an isomer mixture of the flavonolignans silybin, silychristin and silydianin and other flavonolignans like isosilybin, isosilichristin, dehydrosilibin and dehydrosilichristin.

Sily­marin is the most com­monly used herbal preventive and therapeutic agent against metabolic liver diseases; it protects liver cells both directly and indirectly, and possesses the unique ability to regenerate liver cells that have been injured. At the same time, silymarin is also functional in radiation protection and healthy aging.
